1. Do we need “more Europe” in the power sector?

On the sidelines of this year’s Budapest Climate Summit, we sat down with Christian Zinglersen, Director of the EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) to talk about “more Europe” in the power sector, renewables, their impact on the grid and Ukraine’s integration with the EU power system. 2. Hungary confirms a new regional market

Earlier this month, Hungary’s Energy Minister confirmed that Hungary, Serbia and Slovenia plan to start operating a regional electricity market in 2024. As part of this new initiative, a Budapest-based holding company is to be established for this purpose by late 2024 and to be owned by the transmission system operators of the three partnered countries. 3. Serbia – the “top performer” in energy reforms

Taking a closer look at one of the partnered countries, Serbia emerged as the “top performer” in the Energy Community Secretariat’s Annual Implementation Report on the Contracting Parties’ implementation of energy policy reforms between November 2022 to October 2023. Read the full story here. 

4. First floating solar farm in the Baltic region

DEREX announced last Monday that it has installed a 2.1 MW floating solar farm in the Gulf of Riga, marking the first floating solar farm in the Baltic region. The farm is expected to cover the full power demand of a wastewater treatment plant in Jurmala, Gulf of Riga. Read the full story here. 

5. ORLEN tests ecological asphalt

Ending this week’s list with a peak into green innovation, ORLEN announced last Tuesday that its Research and Development Centre and the Gdańsk University of Technology have developed a new ecological asphalt that reduces harmful substances from car exhaust fumes and heating installations. The company is now looking to verify the eco-friendly properties of the asphalt in real operating conditions. Read the full story here.
