EU ‘ready’ to partner with Montenegro to build LNG terminal, says EU Enlargement Commissioner

During a meeting with Montenegrin Prime Minister Dritan Abazović on Friday (6 October), EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelji said that the EU is ready to partner with Montenegro to build a liquified natural gas (LNG) terminal in the country.

In May, the Montenegrin government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Canadian company Enerflex Energy Systems and US company Wethington Energy Innovation to support the construction of a fixed LNG terminal in the southern coastal town of Bar.

At the meeting on Friday, PM Abazović said that this is a historic development for Montenegro and a sign that, in addition to convincing our European partners of the importance of this project, Montenegro is moving towards diversifying its economy.

The PM recalled that the Government had previously signed a memorandum with American investors regarding the LNG terminal in Bar, assessing at the same time the interest and willingness of EU partners to finance such a project from European funds.
