Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency’s representative Ljiljana Zornjak said last week that the agency recorded two significant discoveries of geothermal waters in 2023, confirming the existence of commercially viable quantities of hot water.
One of these discoveries serves as the “foundation” for further district heating development, while the other pertains to harnessing geothermal water for electricity production. These discoveries open opportunities for private investments in the geothermal sector, the Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency noted in a press release.
“Last year, as part of our efforts to promote the utilisation of geothermal resources, the agency successfully entered into a contract with the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund. This contract represents a crucial step towards promoting and supporting the use of geothermal energy, highlighting the shared commitment of both institutions to the development of clean and renewable energy sources in Croatia,” said Ljiljana Zornjak.
Mr Zornjak also noted that the agency secured financial resources amounting to 55 million euros through the EU’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The funds are allocated for drilling four wells, reducing geological risks, and facilitating access to financing for future projects.
