GAZ-SYSTEM with environmental green light for Gdańsk FSRU terminal

Polish gas transmission operator GAZ-SYSTEM announced on Monday (19 February) that Gdańsk’s Regional Director for Environmental Protection (RDOŚ) has issued a decision on environmental conditions for the planned floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) terminal, including an offshore gas pipeline.

The decision is immediately enforceable, enabling GAZ-SYSTEM to proceed with the next steps necessary to implement the project.

“I would like to thank the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Gdańsk for the efficiency in issuing the decision on environmental conditions for the FSRU Terminal, which defines the conditions for the project execution and is essential for the efforts to obtain the location decision,” said Sławomir Hinc, President of GAZ-SYSTEM Management Board.

The company plans to implement dedicated measures to reduce the environmental impact of the FSRU terminal’s construction and operation, including a trenchless crossing across the Stogi beach for a gas pipeline connecting the FSRU terminal with the onshore network. This would ensure that the beach remains intact and can be continuously used without any inconvenience.

“In implementing our projects, we balance technological and environmental issues. Minimising the impact on the natural environment is a priority in all our investments, in particular those conducted in areas of such environmental value as the Gulf of Gdańsk. We will therefore do our utmost to reduce the impact of the FSRU terminal and the offshore gas pipeline on the environment and to preserve the landscape of this site,” added the President.

Before issuing the environmental decision, RDOŚ conducted public consultations organised in parallel by RDOŚ and GAZ-SYSTEM at the end of 2023.
