North Macedonia’s government announced on Saturday (13 January) that it has launched a public call for a universal electricity supplier.
The chosen universal supplier will supply electricity to households and small consumers in an area where there is an obligation to ensure universal service and those who have chosen to be supplied by it.
Three operators have already submitted their bids, with gross margins of 11.4 per cent, 11.4 per cent and 11.45 per cent, the North Macedonian government noted in a press release.
After evaluating the economic-financial and technical capability of the bidders, the operators whose bids meet the conditions according to the criteria will be invited to participate in a reverse auction through electronic bidding. The starting value will be the lowest of the offered margins by the economic operators whose bids meet the conditions.
The bidder who offers the lowest margin in the electronic auction will be invited to become the universal electricity supplier.
The procedure is expected to be completed within six months from 20 October, when the government officially made the decision to initiate the procedure for the selection of a universal electricity supplier.

The universal supplier will be obliged to ensure service for no more than five years. Austrian power company EVN is the current universal supplier, fulfilling its five-year contract.
