Japanese Minister of Economy, Industry and Trade Ken Saito and Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó have agreed on the joint technological development of low-power and small-size nuclear reactors for both countries, announced Mr Szijjártó after they met in the Japanese capital on Tuesday, 21 May.
Apart from the Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which can bring about a revolutionary change in the global energy industry, Tokyo and Budapest have already made preparations to cooperate in the field of extending the service life of the operating nuclear reactor units of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Central Hungary.
Japan and Hungary both approach nuclear energy realistically, emphasised the Hungarian foreign minister, adding that nuclear energy is the cheapest, most reliable and environmentally friendly way to produce large amounts of electric power in Hungary, confirmed Mr Szijjártó.
