Poland commissions eighth geothermal heating plant

Poland’s Minister of Climate and Environment Paulina Hennig-Kolska and Chief National Geologist Krzysztof Galos participated in the commissioning of a geothermal heating plant in Koło (western Poland) on Friday (1 March).

This marks the country’s eighth commissioned geothermal heating plant. The plant in Koło has very favourable temperature parameters of around 90 degrees Celsius geothermal water, Poland’s Climate and Environment Ministry stated in a press release.

“In the Konin region, we have all the human and infrastructural resources to maintain the area’s role as an important energy producer. This time, it’s about clean energy, originating from zero-emission sources. That’s why today I participated in the opening of the Geothermal Heating Plant in Kolo. The wells in this location go down almost 3,000 metres! This is evidence that success doesn’t always require reaching high. Sometimes, you need to dig deep to find it,” said Paulina Hennig-Kloska, Minister of Climate and Environment.

The development of geothermal energy as a renewable source of energy is an important objective of Poland’s Energy Policy until 2040, the ministry noted.

“The undeniable fact is that climate changes are accelerating. But we know where we should be heading, and everything is in our hands. However, it is impossible to carry out the energy transformation from the capital without having partners in the regions, such as here in Koło. All this is so that people can breathe cleaner air and have lower bills,” added Minister Hennig-Kloska.
