Poland finally has a new onshore wind power law – what’s next?

After months of debate and lobbying efforts, Poland adopted a new onshore wind power law on Monday. The new legislative framework obliges wind farm investors to provide at least 10 per cent of the installed capacity to local residents and includes the strongly criticised ‘700-metre rule’ which is expected to significantly reduce the available space for installed capacity. Can the EU-US task force fix the ‘IRA’ issue?

Paying a special visit to US President Joe Biden in the White House, European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, said that both sides are taking new steps to deepen ties. The Commission President said that the EU-US Task Force on the Inflation Reduction Act has taken practical steps on the identified challenges to align the approaches to strengthening and securing supply chains, manufacturing and innovation on both sides of the Atlantic. European Commission proposes its EU electricity market reform

On Tuesday, the EU’s executive body proposed its long-awaited reform proposal for the electricity market design. If adopted, the proposal will give consumers a wide choice of contracts and clearer information to have the option to lock in long-term prices to avoid excessive risks and volatility. At the same time, consumers will still be able to choose dynamic pricing contracts to take advantage of price variability. Rules on sharing renewable energy are also being revamped. Wien Energie and OMV form a new geothermal joint venture in the Vienna region

Setting sights on Austria, the country’s largest regional energy provider, Wien Energie, and energy group, OMV, announced a new joint venture deal, which will see the two Austrian companies pool their expertise and planning experience to develop deep geothermal energy in the Greater Vienna area. Ukraine’s Naftogaz begins new gas production operations

Naftogaz’s JSC Ukrgasvydobuvannya announced on Tuesday that it drilled a new appraisal and development well with a depth of 5,950 metres – with a production rate of 340 trillion cubic metres (tcm) of natural gas per day. Despite operating in a state of war, the successful drilling of the new well paves the way for plans to drill another well in the area. Read the full story here.
