Multi-partner platform launched for the transformation of coal regions in the Western Balkans and Ukraine
The World Bank, the EBRD, the European Commission, the Energy Community Secretariat and the Government of Poland joined forces for an initiative that provides dedicated help for coal-dependent regions in the Western Balkans and Ukraine.
Phasing out coal from the electricity sector is crucial for Europe’s coal triangle: Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. The move away from coal in one country will not count if neighbouring countries continue to produce energy from coal.
Within the next five years, DEPA will invest around 200 million euros in new activities, which also contains a RES portfolio of 200 megawatts (MW) as well as hydrogen and biomethane projects.
