Renewables ‘new opportunity’ for farmers, Polish ministry says

On Thursday (31 August), Poland’s Secretary of State at the Ministry of Climate and Environment (Deputy Minister) and Government Plenipotentiary for Renewable Energy Sources (RES) Ireneusz Zyska participated in a meeting on agricultural technology in the context of renewables and circular economy.

“We have been consistently developing the renewable energy sector for over seven years, as evidenced by the data at the end of June 2023, a record month for RES in Poland. According to the data, RES installations now account for over 25 gigawatts (GW), of which photovoltaics account for over 14 GW. Capacity installed in RES in June this year amounted to 25,396 MW, which is more than three times higher than in 2015 when the RES capacity was only 7,105 MW,” said the RES Plenipotentiary.

“The capacity of renewable energy sources installations exceeded 40 per cent of the installed capacity in the National Energy System. Moreover, almost 1.3 million PV micro-installations generated 1 terawatt-hour (TW)/1 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity for the first time,” he added.

Deputy Minister Zyska pointed out that the ministry recognises the validity of combining agricultural activities with renewables. According to an assessment conducted by the Ministry of Climate and Environment, photovoltaic investments do not preclude agricultural activities and are, in fact, predisposed to optimal use of the investment area and open up new opportunities for diversifying agricultural income.

The Deputy Minister informed that the ministry is analysing solutions that can enable the combination of both agricultural and energy-related functions, as long as the nature of agricultural production allows it and the technical and economic conditions for such an investment are met.
