Poland: Minister visits site for pumped-storage power plant

On 17 February, the Polish Minister of Climate and Environment, Anna Moskwa, took part in a meeting with local government officials and residents of the town of Bystrzyca Kłodzka regarding plans for a pumped-storage power plant in Młoty, a village in the southwest of Poland.

The Ministry of Climate and Environment is currently working on a special regulatory act on the preparation and implementation of investments in the field of pumped-storage power plants, the Ministry confirmed in a press release. The PGE Group is conducting technical analyses of the concept of the power plant in Młoty and plans to make an investment decision in mid-2023, the Polish Climate and Environment Ministry said.

“The draft act from the Ministry of Climate and Environment on removing legal barriers to the construction of pumped-storage power plants has been adopted by the Standing Committee of the Council of Ministers. We plan to submit it to Parliament before the end of this parliamentary term,” Minister Moskwa said.

“Pumped storage power plants are currently gaining in importance with the growing share of renewable energy sources. Photovoltaic installations or wind farms provide energy when certain weather conditions occur: the sun is shining or the wind is blowing. This does not always coincide with the demand for energy and hence the need for its storage so that it can be used during peak demand,” added Minister Moskwa.

According to the Polish Environment and Climate Ministry, the draft law proposes the creation of a regulatory environment for investments in the construction of pumped-storage power plants, which would aim to incentivise investment in this area of RES.
