Ørsted and PGE pick Siemens Gamesa as turbines supplier for Baltica 2 offshore wind farm

Ørsted and the PGE Group have signed a contract with the German Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy for the supply of wind turbines for the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm project.

Baltica 2 is a joint venture project between the Polish PGE Group and the Danish Ørsted, initiated in early 2021. The offshore wind farm will produce electricity for approximately 2.4 million Polish households and is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2027.

“We are implementing the largest project in the history of renewable energy in Poland. The contract signed today concerns the supply of turbines for Baltica 2 with a capacity of approximately 1.5 GW, which is the largest investment carried out in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea and one of the largest of its kind in the world,” said Wojciech Dąbrowski, President of PGE’s Management Board.

“The PGE Group is responsible for ensuring Poland’s energy security. We consistently implement the strategy of creating new, green sources of electricity for our country. By 2030, we intend to build approximately 2.5 GW of generation capacity in the Baltic Sea,” he added.

“The recently signed contract for Baltica 2 strengthens the foundations for the successful construction of the offshore wind energy sector in Poland. The Baltic Sea offers great opportunities for the industry to flourish in the coming years, and we, together with Poland and our partners, are committed to its further development,” said Marc Becker, President of Siemens Gamesa in the offshore area.

In addition to supplying 107 turbines with a capacity of 14 MW each, Siemens Gamesa will be responsible for the service and supply of spare parts for a five-year period, once the wind farm is officially commissioned.
