Moldovatransgaz installs new 100 kW solar farm

Moldova’s gas transmission system operator, Moldovatransgaz, has installed a new photovoltaic (PV) power station with a capacity of 100 kilowatts (kW) for its green energy production, the company announced on 10 February.

As highlighted in a press release from Moldovatransgaz, photovoltaic panels represent a renewable energy source (RES) with a lifetime that can exceed 25 years, minimal maintenance costs and the most ecological electricity production systems.

Going forward, the company plans to expand its green portfolio by building additional “equipment with a minimal impact on the environment,” the press release added.

Moldova’s renewables outlook

Despite the country’s high RES potential, the deployment of wind and solar energy in
Moldova has been very slow, according to the German Energy Agency (DENA). Only around 97.9 megawatts (MW) of renewable capacity for electricity generation was installed by June 2022.

Moldova’s energy self-sufficiency is currently among the lowest in the world: only around 25 per cent of its energy demand is covered by domestic production, consisting almost entirely of solid biomass and RES, according to the International Energy Agency.

The country exceeded the Energy Community’s headline RES target of 17 per cent by reaching just over 25 per cent of renewables in its energy mix in 2020. However, in its 2022 Annual Implementation Report, the Energy Community Secretariat highlighted that only the sectoral target for heating and cooling was overreached, while the contribution of RES to electricity and transport remains very low.
