MOL Group completes acquisition of the Szarvas biogas plant

Hungary’s energy group MOL has concluded an agreement with German energy company BayWa to acquire the Szarvas biogas plant, which uses organic wastes to produce electricity and heat through cogeneration with a peak electric power capacity of around 4 megawatts (MW).

Annually, the plant processes more than 40,000 tons of waste from meat production in the region and additional 53,000 tons of residual waste from neighbouring livestock. Furthermore, around 18,000 tons of agricultural substrate are used as feedstock for the plant, producing more than 12.5 million cubic metres (mcm) of biogas per year.

The acquisition is in line with MOL Group’s strategy to be aligned with the goals set out by the Renewable Energy Directive and the REPowerEU plan, especially considering the role that MOL has in ensuring the energy security of Central and Eastern Europe. It is also an important step for MOL’s expansion of its sustainable energy production portfolio.

The plant possesses one of the largest biogas production capacities in Central Eastern Europe and is also located in an area where MOL Group’s exploration and production activities are already present. According to MOL Group, this creates a unique synergy by providing infrastructure to the biogas facilities for upgrading its gas products.
