Speaking at the meeting of the NATO Political Committee on Energy Security Sergiy Makogon, Director General of Gas TSO of Ukraine stressed that reliable gas supply is an integral part of the transatlantic energy security and warned of the use of gas as an instrument of political influence.
“Ukraine has repeatedly experienced the use of gas as a hybrid geopolitical weapon,” underlined Mr Makogon adding that today this phenomenon has become a pan-European problem, taking into account the current price situation in the gas markets and manipulations with supplies of gas to the EU.
“What is happening in the energy sector is a threat not only to Ukraine but to all the countries of Europe,” said the Director-General of GTSOU highlighting that now we are witnessing how natural gas becomes an instrument of political influence.
He noted that the Gas TSO of Ukraine is ready to offer additional capacities for gas transportation to the EU to contribute to solving the problem with gas shortages in the energy markets.
Mr Makogon pointed out that in order to safeguard energy security in Europe there should be no exceptions from the rules of the Third Energy Package referring to the 55 billion cubic metres (bcm) per year of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project.
The Director-General also underlined that the physical transit of at least 45 bcm of gas per year should be guaranteed through the territory of Ukraine.
He noted that adherence to market principles and a transparent tariff system as well as the avoidance of artificial bottlenecks are paramount to maintain energy security.
