SPP renews gas contracts to strengthen energy diversification in Slovakia

Slovakia’s energy supplier SPP signed new contracts with the largest international suppliers of natural gas for 2023 and 2024. First of all, it extended cooperation with BP, ensuring the supply of natural gas from production fields in the North Sea. Then, it extended its cooperation with ExxonMobil for gas supplies from its global portfolio. Finally, new contracts for the purchase of natural gas were finalised with Shell, ENI and RWE for the years 2023 and 2024. By concluding these contracts, SPP could cover approximately 70 per cent of its customers’ consumption from sources that are not Russian.

Miroslav Kulla, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of SPP considered these contracts as a further success, following the fact that already in 2022, the company was able to diversify 36 per cent of Slovakia’s gas supplies.

“We currently focus not only on the heating season 2023-2024 but also on the following heating season, 2024-2025,” added Marián Široký, vice-chairman of the SPP board of directors. “This is a consequence of unbalanced supply and demand, which are expected to stabilise only in 2026 with the completion of LNG terminals, new regasification units and the improvement of natural gas transport infrastructure in Europe.”

Currently, SPP said to be able to ensure gas supplies for its customers not only from the East, via the still-functioning transport route through Ukraine, but also supplies from the North Sea or Western and Southern Europe.

At the same time, the company is also working to ensure direct access to LNG terminals and their regasification capacity. Therefore, SPP is preparing to cooperate more with the Polish GAZ-SYSTEM, which operates both the already operational terminal in Świnoujście and the new one in Gdansk. SPP is also preparing to begin similar cooperation with Lithuanian, Italian and German gas infrastructure operators.
