Poland’s GAZ-SYSTEM ready to build ‘Warsaw gas pipeline’

The Polish gas transmission operator, GAZ-SYSTEM has concluded a set of contracts to start the construction of the Rembelszczyzna-Mory gas pipeline, the company announced today (22 March). As part of this, GAZ-SYSTEM selected the Polish construction company, Budimex as a contractor for the project and secured the supply of pipes, fittings and induction bends.

The project will strengthen the security of gas supply to residents in the Warsaw Metropolitan Area and enable the transmission of over two billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas annually. It will also be possible to connect new recipients to the gas network, such as CHP (combined heat and power) and heating plants, which in turn will translate into an increase in the capital’s electricity and heat generation capacity, the company said.

The Warsaw gas pipeline will be 28.5 kilometres long and will connect the Rembelszczyzna region (north Warsaw) with Mory (east Warsaw). Its route will run through the communes of Nieporęt, Jabłonna, Łomianki, Stare Babice and Ożarów Mazowiecki as well as three Warsaw districts: Białołęka, Bielany and Bemowo.

The construction of the pipeline will start soon and is expected to last for 24 months.

At the design stage, several measures were taken to minimise the environmental impact of the project, the company said. Thanks to an additional financial outlay of 36 million złotych (7.7 million euros), the company reduced the felling of trees by around 30 per cent compared to original estimates. The company has also committed to making additional voluntary plantings. In the Łomianki commune, the company will also cover 80 per cent of the costs of the renovation of the Vistula river embankments on the Buraków-Sady section.

Separately, on Monday (20 March), GAZ-SYSTEM announced that on 16 March, the European Commission issued a decision confirming the granting of financial support for the ‘Gustorzyn-Wronów gas pipeline – construction of the Leśniewice-Wronów section’.
