Naftogaz discovers new gas deposit in Carpathians

Ukrainian energy company Naftogaz Group announced on Friday (17 November) that its subsidiary Ukrgasvydobuvannya has discovered a “promising new gas” deposit in the Carpathians in a field that was considered exhausted.

Tests of an exploratory well produced a gas flow rate of more than 200,000 m3 per day – the highest UGV indicator for deposits in western Ukraine in the last 20 years, Naftogaz said in a press release.

A team of Ukrburgaz (a division of Ukrgasvydobuvannya) specialists drilled a new well with a depth of 1,600 metres for further exploration of the depleted deposit. Record gas production rates were achieved thanks to the use of modern technologies, in particular the “Ivan Bohun” drilling rig.

“This result demonstrates the effectiveness of modern technologies and new approaches to data interpretation. The western region of Ukraine has great potential for new hydrocarbon deposits, which is confirmed by the experience of neighbouring countries. We are now intensifying our activities in this region, in particular with regard to the introduction of new technologies and the attraction of investments,” said Oleg Tolmachev, Acting General Director of Ukrgasvydobuvannya.

The well was laid based on the interpretation of new data from previously conducted seismic 3D surveys. It was put into operation in a very short time, with pipelines built and the gas preparation plant modernised.

“Based on the results of geophysical studies, our specialists identified a number of productive horizons that expand the prospects for drilling new wells. The results of the test well will now make it possible to estimate the reserves of the new deposit. We are grateful to the specialists from the geological exploration department of the Carpathian region,  the Ukrainian Research Institute of Natural Gases (UkrNDIGas) and Lvivgasvydobuvannya, who developed and implemented this project,” said Maksym Vityk, Director of Exploration and Development at Ukrgasvydobuvannya.

Lvivgasvydobuvannya (a division of Ukrgasvydobuvannya) specialists are currently working on expanding the technological capabilities of local infrastructure to increase well productivity.
