Latvia closes natural gas withdrawal season with 9 TWh in storage at Inčukalns

Continuing to ensure uninterrupted availability of natural gas, Latvia’s natural gas transmission and storage system operator Conexus Baltic Grid has closed the 2022/2023 natural gas withdrawal season with 9 terawatt-hours (TWh) of active natural gas stored in the Inčukalns underground gas storage (UGS), which is 21 per cent more than last year. Also this year, Conexus offered natural gas injection options during the withdrawal season, creating stable natural gas reserves in the storage facility.

During the gas injection season, the storage facility was filled to 60 per cent of the available technical capacity for the 2022/2023 storage cycle, withdrawing 8.7 TWh of natural gas during the withdrawal season.

To ensure energy security, Conexus continued to provide system users with the physical injection of natural gas into the storage facility during the withdrawal cycle, thus ensuring natural gas storage for the region. A total of 4.8 TWh of natural gas was injected into the storage facility during the last withdrawal cycle, bringing the current natural gas storage to more than 9 TWh.

The largest daily natural gas withdrawal of 148.8 GWh was consumed on 2 December, with the largest monthly withdrawal of the season in December, amounting to 2.6 TWh.

Conexus has determined the maximum amount of natural gas to be stored for the market participants of Inčukalns UGS or the technical capacity of the storage facility for the 2023/2024 storage cycle, which according to the measurements and calculations has been set at 22.6 TWh.

The auctions for the 2023/2024 storage cycle have so far reserved all the available capacity of 22.6 TWh or 100 per cent of the technical capacity.
