Romania’s Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja and Societățăia Electrocentrale Craiova’s General Manager, Dan Vasile recently signed a financing agreement for a new gas-fired power and thermal energy production plant in southern Romania (29 June).
The new high-efficiency cogeneration electricity and thermal energy production site with a capacity of 295 megawatts (MW) will replace existing coal-powered capacities.
Scheduled to be commissioned in 2026, the plant will play an important role in reaching Romania’s targets set out in its integrated national energy and climate plan (NECP) for 2030, the Romanian Energy Ministry said in a press release.
“As promised, we managed to close this important milestone in the NECP in record time and on the assumed deadline. I thank all those who have made efforts, over time, to achieve this important goal. The investment from Craiova is designed to benefit from the latest technologies in the field, being a guarantee for all Craiova residents for safe access to electricity and thermal energy, with low CO2 emissions, which means cleaner air and a better quality of life for the whole community. We will continue at an accelerated pace the large investment projects in the Romanian energy sector and the absorption of European funds,” said Minister Burduja.
The project is part of the country’s EU National Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), related to investment measure I.3, milestone 133. The project is valued at 250 million euros, with 165 million euros covered by the RPP funding.
