European Commission opens second round of demand pooling for joint gas purchases

The European Commission has launched another round of gas demand pooling for European companies via the AggregateEU mechanism, to gauge interest in jointly purchasing gas on the international market for a second time (26 June).

As recently announced by European Commission’s Vice-President, Maroš Šefčovič, this new round builds on the first tender announced last month, in which more than 11 billion cubic metres (bcm) of aggregated European gas demand were matched with offers by reliable suppliers.

“The EU Energy Platform on joint gas purchasing is working well and shows Europe at its best. Joining forces is key to guaranteeing stable and affordable gas supplies to the EU market, for the benefit of our businesses and citizens. As we enter a crucial stage of the storage refilling season, I encourage both buyers and suppliers to make the best use of this new marketplace and further stabilise the European gas market ahead of the winter,” said Mr Šefčovič.

European companies now have until 3 July to respond to the call for gas demand aggregation. The collective demand will subsequently be put out to tender on the global market from 7 to 10 of July, enabling international suppliers to submit their supply offers.

Prospective buyers can submit their demand for gas to be delivered between August 2023 and March 2025, an extended period compared to the first round, the European Commission said.
