Bulgaria supports the expansion of gas supplies through Azerbaijan’s Southern Gas Corridor

At the Ministerial meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council which was opened by the Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, Energy Minister of Bulgaria Alexander Nikolov stressed the importance of the Southern Gas Corridor in diversifying natural gas sources and routes to European countries. He also underlined that Bulgaria is interested in obtaining additional quantities of natural gas from Azerbaijan.

According to Minister Nikolov, with the launch of new transmission infrastructure and supplies the last year, the Southern Gas Corridor proved its strategic significance in increasing the energy security of European countries.

“Stable supplies from our strategic partner Azerbaijan are a key factor in mitigating the negative effects on the economy caused by high energy prices”, he pointed out, adding that “further integration of energy markets in the region will allow us to build the right responses to the challenges of energy prices.”

In particular, the Minister emphasised the role of the Greece-Bulgaria interconnector in ensuring access to the Southern Gas Corridor and the LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis, Greece, where Bulgaria holds 20 per cent of shares.

“Bulgaria will continue to work actively on all gas projects that provide diversification of sources and routes of supply”, the Minister concluded.
