Azeri gas supplies to Europe are up by 60% in the first quarter

The volume of gas transported from Azerbaijan through the Trans-Anatolian gas pipeline (TANAP) to Turkey and Europe in the first quarter of 2022 amounted to 4.01 billion cubic metres (bcm), announced Rovshan Najaf, First Vice President of SOCAR, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan.

TANAP connects the giant Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan to Turkey and to Europe through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). According to the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan, over the same period last year, the volume of gas transported through TANAP amounted to 2.5 bcm, from which 1.4 bcm was transported to Turkey and 1.1 bcm to Europe.

Azerbaijan plans to boost natural gas supplies this year and pump 16.2 bcm via TANAP mainly to Europe, an 18 per cent export growth compared to last year when 13.73 bcm of gas was transported through the pipeline. The plans involve an increase of capacity to 23.7 bcm in the second phase and then 31 bcm in the third phase, which would take four to five years, with additional construction required.

The First Vice President of SOCAR underlined that from the moment TANAP was put into operation and as of April 2022, 26.13 bcm of gas have been transported through this gas pipeline.

With the completion of the TAP construction at the end of 2020, Azerbaijan began commercial gas supplies to Europe via the Southern Gas Corridor. Last year, TAP transported 8.1 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe. In March, TAP transported the first 10 bcm of gas to Europe. Luca Schieppati, TAP Managing Director highlighted that the 10 bcm is a symbolic milestone, but TAP can double its capacity and expand in stages, up to 20 bcm within the next five years

Earlier, the EU announced that the bloc aims to reach independence from Russian gas well before the end of the decade and to reduce purchases of Russian oil and gas at a rapid pace.
