Azerbaijan and Albania energy talks ‘very constructive,’ Minister says

Albania’s Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku met with her Azerbaijani counterpart, Parviz Shahbazov prior to the first meeting of a new Azerbaijan-Albania Working Group on Economic, Industrial and Technological cooperation on Thursday (4 April).

In the area of energy, Minister Balluku said that the conversation between the two sides was “very constructive”. “Today we have identified many areas of potential cooperation. Among these areas, energy is of particular interest to both countries,” she said.

Ms Balluku also highlighted Albania’s flagship energy projects such as the gasification of Korçë or the expansion of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) consortium and the development of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Vlorë (south Albania).

During the Working Group meeting, which took place on the same day, Minister Shahbazov said that the expansion of the Southern Gas Corridor and the creation of a local gas distribution system with the support of Azerbaijan will increase Albania’s benefits from the TAP projects.

Albanian companies have also been invited to cooperate in Azerbaijani green energy projects, Azerbaijan’s Energy Ministry said.

“The gasification project for the city of Korçë is at the preliminary feasibility stage. If the gas network is built, not only will the country’s energy balance be diversified, but we will also jointly participate in strengthening the energy security of the Balkan region. Intensive consultations are also underway on several new projects that will contribute to the activities of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) in Albania and energy cooperation between the two countries,” Minister Shahbazov said.
