A look back at GAZ-SYSTEM’s 2022

Earlier this week, GAZ-SYSTEM, the Polish natural gas transmission operator, presented an overview of its achievements and overall performance in 2022. According to a press release by the company, GAZ-SYSTEM fulfilled all of its “main goals”: maintaining a dynamic ship and tanker service at the LNG Terminal in Świnoujście, ensuring gas transmission through interconnectors with Lithuania and Slovakia and operating at full capacity at the recently built Baltic Pipe pipeline.

In 2022, the company transmitted almost 19 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas, which includes underground gas storage facilities. Last year, 58 methane carriers arrived at the gas terminal in Świnoujście, which averages nearly five deliveries per month. This is a major increase when compared to data from 2021 and 2020, when 35 ships were handled annually.

This year, the President Lech Kaczynski LNG Terminal in Świnoujście docked its first ship on 6 January 2023 and is expected to dock over 60 ships in 2023. The second stage of the terminal’s expansion is also underway, with its completion scheduled for the 2023/2024 period.

As highlighted in the press release, the Polish gas transmission system is stable, despite the lack of supplies from Russia and the ongoing armed conflict near Poland’s eastern border. The lack of gas shortages and a stable operation of the system is “primarily” due to the completion of key investments in the country’s energy security, ie. interconnectors with Denmark (Baltic Pipe), Lithuania and Slovakia, the North-South Corridor, as well as the completion of the first stage of the expansion of the Świnoujście LNG Terminal.

The total length of the gas pipelines operated by GAZ-SYSTEM is now over 11,800 kilometres, including nearly 1,000 kilometres commissioned in the last year.
