Westinghouse to assist Energoatom in completion of Khmelnytsky NPP

US company Westinghouse will assist Ukraine’s nuclear energy firm Energoatom in the completion of Units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant, as announced by the Head of Energoatom, Petro Kotin.

According to him, Energoatom’s strategic partner Westinghouse is conducting a GAP analysis that will assist in the enhancement of the safety systems of new nuclear power plants.

“Westinghouse will analyse the aspects that need to be added to the initial design of the VVER-1000 power unit in order to bring it to the III+ safety level,” he said. “This is today’s most modern technology with the best safety systems.”

Petro Kotin also emphasised that several additional safety systems are currently being designed with the participation of Westinghouse and these will be implemented on Units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytsky NPP in the future.
