Westinghouse excluded from Dukovany tender, only 2 suppliers enter second phase

The tender for the construction of a new nuclear unit at the Dukovany power plant, in the Czech Republic, is entering the second phase and US company Westinghouse has been excluded as it “did not meet the necessary conditions.”

Only two companies will enter the second phase, as announced by the government, Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) and Électricité de France (EDF). At the same time, the ongoing tender has been amended and the two potential suppliers will have to make firm bids by mid-April for up to four new reactors in total. Utility company CEZ, which is operating the nuclear power plant, will send its evaluation of the tenders to the government by the end of May.

The decision to amend the tender was taken following the first phase, during which it was shown that building more units would be more cost-efficient in the long term, with every reactor costing 25 per cent less. This way will help optimise the construction process, explained Minister for Industry and Trade Jozef Sikela, adding that the need to build more nuclear reactors is a result of the development of the Czech energy industry which will see a surge in electricity consumption by two-thirds by 2050.

Despite the announced changes, the plan remains the same, with the first nuclear unit put into operation by the end of 2036.
