Polish energy giant breaks small-scale LNG record

In 2023, a record-breaking number of 8,423 liquified natural gas (LNG) tanks were loaded at the Świnoujście terminal in Poland, with a total volume exceeding 149,500 tonnes, Polish energy company ORLEN announced on Monday (29 January).

“In 2023, the number of tankers loaded at the President Lech Kaczyński Terminal with liquefied natural gas imported to Poland by the ORLEN Group increased by almost 60 per cent. This is over 3,000 tanks more than in 2022. We are constantly working to enhance the attractiveness of our commercial offer and optimise logistics to meet the growing demand for small-scale LNG from both industrial and municipal customers,” said Daniel Obajtek, former President of the ORLEN Management Board [Mr Obajtek was dismissed effective from 5 February].

ORLEN said that the newly set record in small-scale LNG may already be broken this year. The number of the company’s LNG tanks that left the terminal by 28 January is over 112 per cent higher than throughout January 2023.

“However, the dynamic development of this market would not be possible without diversification of supplies and the strong position of the company in the international gas market. Thanks to this, the ORLEN Group can ensure its customers secure deliveries of the highest-quality raw material,” Mr Obajtek added.

Small-scale LNG is a segment of the gas market in which fuel is delivered in a liquefied form using cryogenic tankers and containers. The Świnoujście terminal is Poland’s main point of LNG sales.

The LNG imported by ORLEN to Poland is mostly regasified and introduced into the nationwide transmission and distribution network. There is also a “dynamic increase” in the volume of LNG delivered in a liquefied form to customers, including industrial clients from various sectors and individual consumers connected to isolated gas systems, ORLEN said in a press release.
