Poland to establish ‘Central Hydrogen Valley’ following agreement signing

Poland’s Industrial Development Agency (Agencja Rozwoju Przemysłu) together with 26 other stakeholders have signed a letter of intent to establish the “Central Hydrogen Valley,” which will operate in three voivodeships in central Poland: Łódzkie, Mazowieckie and Świętokrzyskie (17 July).

The agreement signing took place at the Kozienice Power Plant, which is currently being modernised with a combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) enabling co-combustion of green hydrogen in the plant’s gas units.

“The construction of power units in gas and steam technology has begun in Kozienice. These units will also be prepared to use low-emission hydrogen. Another important recipient of hydrogen fuel in the Central Hydrogen Valley will be the ceramic industry, which uses this raw material in production processes. It is also worth mentioning the need to decarbonise the transport of large urban centres such as Kielce or Radom, as well as transport in the surrounding areas of the Solidarity Transport Hub, an important economic project in Poland,” said Anna Moskwa, Minister of Climate and the Environment, who attended the agreement signing.

The Central Hydrogen Valley will cover the entire process of hydrogen production and utilisation. This will start with the construction of electrolysers that will convert electricity into hydrogen, through hydrogen storage, and finish with its use for electricity production.

“We are glad that the inauguration of the Central Hydrogen Valley takes place in Kozienice, because it is here that Enea invests in a perspective and innovative way. The new gas blocks will be ready for the co-combustion of the fuel of the future, which is hydrogen. We are already saying that in the next few years – when the units begin operating – we will be interested in using the green hydrogen produced in the process of electrolysis using energy from renewable sources. The investment process of the construction of gas units is being carried out according to the schedule,” said Paweł Majewski, President of the Management Board of Enea.

Among the valley’s flagship projects is the production of green energy from wind and solar farms with a capacity of 2 gigawatts, and hydrogen electrolysers with a capacity of 250 megawatts.

Deputy Minister chairs Hydrogen Economy Coordinating Council

Separately, Ireneusz Zyska, Deputy Climate and the Environment Minister chaired the 5th meeting of the Coordinating Council for the Hydrogen Economy, which was held at the headquarters of the Climate and the Environment Ministry (7 July).

“Thanks to our commitment, we are already observing the intensive development of technologies and business projects, the implementation of which results in the expansion of the hydrogen economy ecosystem in Poland. Research and development projects are being created, such as the project of the solid oxide electrolyser of the Institute of Energy, hydrogen valleys are created, consortia are established that build the tissue of the hydrogen economy. Poland is at the forefront of European Union countries developing hydrogen initiatives,” said Ireneusz Zyska, Deputy Climate and Environment Minister.

The Coordinating Council, consisting of 42 representatives from public administration, entrepreneurs, science, and business organisations, was established in July 2020 to foster effective collaboration, streamline communication, facilitate management, monitor progress and make decisions related to developing a hydrogen economy in Poland.
