Poland and Iceland build closer cooperation in green hydrogen

Last week, the Polish Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment, Ireneusz Zyska, met with a delegation from Iceland in Warsaw, led by the newly appointed Ambassador of Iceland, Hannes Heimison to discuss cooperation in the field of hydrogen, geothermal energy and reducing carbon emissions.

The meeting highlighted the importance of implementing joint projects in the field of clean production of hydrogen and methanol using Icelandic geothermal energy, in order to build a zero-emission economy. One of the Polish-Icelandic projects aims to launch large-scale production of green hydrogen and its derivatives, using geothermal energy from the fields on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

“I am very happy about the cooperation of Polish companies with Icelandic partners in the field of hydrogen production using the wealth of geothermal energy. This cooperation will enable the implementation of initiatives contributing to the development of the latest technologies that will benefit both the environment and the economy,” said Deputy Minister, Ireneusz Zyska.

The Polish Hydrogen Strategy 2030, with an outlook until 2040, defines a strategic framework for the implementation of a hydrogen economy in Poland, with particular emphasis on the use of this fuel in the sectors of energy, heating, transport and industry.

As underlined by Deputy Minister Zyska, it is estimated that, in the Polish geographical and weather conditions, the production of renewable hydrogen will be the fastest sector to become profitable, using the potential of electricity from offshore wind farms.

Separately, last week, a letter of intent was signed to establish the ‘West Pomeranian Hydrogen Valley’, strengthening Poland’s development of hydrogen technology on a regional basis.
