North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley highlighted as key to achieving Slovenia’s climate and energy goals

On the occasion of the 3rd Conference of the Hydrogen Ecosystem North Adriatic, Dr Tomaž Štokelj, Managing Director of Slovenia’s electricity producer HSE, pointed out how hydrogen is important for a successful energy transition, without which carbon neutrality cannot be achieved.

In this regard, the North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley (NAHV) project, where HSE acts as a lead partner in the consortium, is the first such example in the transnational space. The joint project of Slovenia, Croatia and Italy – the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia has been highlighted as key to achieving the set climate and energy goals of Slovenia and Europe, while it also offers many opportunities in the technological and scientific fields as well as in the field of employment.

Key industrial stakeholders from all three countries will develop pilot projects for the production of more than 5,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year from renewable energy sources and its storage, distribution and use. The final goal of the project is to decarbonise major industrial sectors such as steel and cement production, as well as sustainable transport solutions related to reducing the carbon footprint.
