Polish operator signs deal to develop transmission lines in national forests

Polish power transmission operator Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (Polish Power Grids) and Lasy Państwowe (State Forests) have signed letters of intent and cooperation for the construction of transmission lines in state-owned forests (18 August).

The document sets out a cooperation framework between both sides during PSE’s transmission infrastructure development on land managed by Lasy Państwowe. For example, it provides rules within which both institutions will cooperate at various stages, from design to construction and commissioning of the lines.

This will streamline the process of implementing key investments for energy security while ensuring the protection of forest resources, Poland’s Climate and Environment Ministry said in a press release.

“Environmental protection is a priority for PSE when investing in transmission infrastructure. The agreement with the State Forests creates a framework for our cooperation, thanks to which we will be able to effectively build power lines in forest areas, minimising their impact on resources and forest management,” stressed PSE President Tomasz Sikorski.

The signing of the agreement was preceded by the signing of a letter of intent, expressing a common desire to establish the principles of cooperation in developing strategic investments in high-voltage transmission networks while protecting forest areas.

“PSE is implementing the largest investment program in the history of the company, which assumes the construction by 2036, among others, over 5,200 km of 400 kV line tracks, 27 new stations and nearly 800 km of direct current [DC] lines. Such a scale requires the development of common standards with other institutions to streamline the process of transmission grid development. The agreement signed with the State Forests responds to this challenge,” said Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska, who was among the signatories of the letter of intent.
