The 4th Budapest Climate Summit will take place this year on 4 December in Budapest, bringing together climate and sustainability stakeholders from Central and Eastern Europe and beyond to discuss the challenges and opportunities of climate change in view of our net-zero ambitions.
High-level policymakers, industry experts, corporate leaders and technology pioneers will come together on 4 December at the Budapest Climate Summit – a well-established regional climate forum – to share their perspectives on how to enable businesses and civil society to deliver actions necessary to achieve climate objectives.
As a niche event focusing on the green transition of the CEE region’s economy, the Budapest Climate Summit is ideally placed to take a prominent role in connecting sustainability stakeholders by providing a platform to discuss the driving trends of the region’s green transition and to identify the opportunities and challenges ahead of us.
The Budapest Climate Summit will be opened by Attila Steiner, State Secretary of Energy and Climate Policy at the Ministry of Energy of Hungary who will present Hungary’s position and progress on the green transition.
At the conference, high-level speakers from ACER (EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators); Cleantech for Europe and the European External Action Service will share their insights on the EU’s response to the unprecedented energy crisis of the past two years, assessing the state of play with the green transition in light of Europe’s ambitious climate and energy goals for 2030 and 2050.
As COP 28 negotiations will take place from 30 November until 12 December, the Budapest Climate Summit will also provide an excellent opportunity to review the main takeaways of the year’s most important climate moment. To understand the scale and implications of climate change on a global scale some world-class speakers will be present at the Budapest Climate Summit, such as Diana Ürge-Vorsatz, who was elected this year as Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – an organisation that provides regular assessments on the scientific basis of climate change.
One of the main focuses of the conference is the changing energy sector as it faces challenges of decarbonization and supply security, which will be presented by speakers such as Nikolaas Baeckelmans, Vice President of EU Affairs of ExxonMobil; Gábor Balázs Lehőcz Executive Chairman of MET Green Assets Holding AG; Zsolt Jamniczky, Deputy CEO of E.ON Hungaria Zrt.; Károly Mátrai, CEO of MVM Group; Franck Neel, Member of the Executive Board of OMV Petrom, Dóra Zombori, Partner at Dentons and Zsófia Beck, Managing Director and Partner of BCG. Innovative energy solutions such as the potential of small modular reactors (SMR) in supporting energy security climate objectives will be also on the table.
Another key topic of the conference is the future of green finance and sustainable investment presented by speakers like András Puskás, Deputy CEO of MBH Bank, Réka Janosik, Executive Director in Quantitative Research and Head of Budapest Climate Risk Center at MSCI, Linda Zeilina, Founder & CEO of the International Sustainable Finance Centre (ISFC) or Anders Risberg, Head of Corporate Financing in Central and South Eastern Europe.
One of the main focuses of the Budapest Climate Summit is to present how business leaders, coming from a range of sectors transform their operations to become competitive, sustainable, inclusive economies that will deliver net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. At the conference, Matt Simister, Central European CEO of Tesco will speak about the sustainable business goals of the company and the implications of green transition in the retail sector, while Dácil Borges, Global Director Consultancy of Xdroid will share her insight on digitalization and climate change.
